Presidential Endorsement Shifts Power Dynamics in Rivers, Tightens Fubara’s Grip

PORT HARCOURT – A recent, direct statement from the Presidency backing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has sharply changed the political dynamics in the oil-rich state.

Observers note that President Tinubu’s public directive—delivered via his spokesman on national television—to allow Governor Fubara to “do his job” was not routine commentary. Rather, it was interpreted as a firm endorsement and a clear political signal that federal protection now tilts toward the governor.

The statement also hinted that “settlement” had been reached with former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, effectively balancing earlier political debts. This has shifted Wike from a position of leverage to a defensive posture.

Political analysts see this as an assertion from Aso Rock against dual control of Rivers politics. The President’s message appears aimed at reducing instability and clarifying that governance in the state should flow from one center.

With federal backing seemingly now behind Fubara, impeachment threats from the state assembly are viewed as increasingly unviable, setting the stage for a recalibrated power structure in Rivers.
