A fresh wave of allegations has erupted against the Executive Chairman of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Mr. Nwaubani, with a group identifying as Concerned Citizens accusing him of financial impropriety, administrative overreach, and marginalisation of elected officials.
In a viral publication, the group alleged that the chairman was implicated in a N19 million embezzlement case involving a former Head of Department, with both parties refunding the sum to the local government after interrogation. The group further claimed Nwaubani receives N300,000 weekly from haulage revenue and is executing multiple capital projects—including markets and a bridge at Azunchai—without stakeholder input or disclosed contract sums.
The allegations also include exclusive reliance on his wife’s relatives for key appointments, absence of stakeholders’ meetings for over one year, and alleged creation of an “Abia Arise” account through which contractors are asked to pay funds purportedly for the Governor.
“Who is signing off these funds? Why are you running the council like a private estate?” the group queried, demanding explanations before the newly constituted state investigative panel.
IGPM Responds
In a swift reaction, the Ikwuano Grassroots Political Movement (IGPM) described the allegations as unverified and legally unsubstantiated.
“These are serious matters within the jurisdiction of statutory investigative bodies—not trial by social media,” the group stated.
IGPM challenged the accusers to append full identities, submit documented evidence to anti-corruption agencies, and allow the law to take its course. It cautioned against spreading unverified information capable of heating the polity.
“Allegations remain allegations until proven,” IGPM insisted, urging calm among residents.
All efforts to reach Chairman Nwaubani for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
