INEC Formally Recognises David Mark-Led ADC Leadership, Ending Prolonged Party Crisis

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a decisive and landmark step by formally recognising the David Mark-led faction as the legitimate and lawful leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), bringing a significant measure of closure to one of the most prolonged, bitter, and publicly damaging internal leadership crises to have rocked any Nigerian opposition party in recent times.

INEC’s recognition of the former Senate President Senator David Mark and his group as the authentic national leadership of the ADC effectively settles — at the administrative and regulatory level — the question of which faction holds the legal authority to conduct the party’s affairs, manage its secretariat, coordinate its primary elections, and fly its flag in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

The commission’s decision follows a turbulent period of legal battles, conflicting court orders, and institutional confusion that had left the ADC paralysed and deeply uncertain about its organisational future. The crisis had seen rival factions — including one associated with former Osun State Governor and ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola — contest the legitimacy of each other’s leadership claims through multiple layers of the Nigerian judicial system, culminating in the Supreme Court’s recent landmark intervention in the matter.

INEC’s formal recognition now provides the David Mark-led ADC with the regulatory green light needed to resume full party operations, mobilise its structures across the country’s thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory, and begin the critical process of preparation for the 2027 electoral cycle with a clearly defined and legally backed leadership at the helm.

For Senator David Mark, the recognition represents a hard-won and significant vindication after months of legal and political battles that tested the resolve and cohesion of his faction within the party.

Political analysts have described INEC’s recognition as a turning point for the ADC, noting that the party now has both the legal clarity and the institutional backing needed to rebuild its structures, attract candidates and politicians, and position itself as a credible alternative political platform ahead of one of Nigeria’s most consequential general elections in recent memory.

The opposing faction within the ADC is yet to issue a formal response to INEC’s recognition at the time of filing this report. It remains to be seen whether the development will prompt further legal challenges or open the door to internal reconciliation talks within the party.
