The political opposition witnessed a major realignment on Sunday, May 3, 2026, as former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) .
The move, which followed weeks of speculation, was concretised during a strategic meeting at the Abuja residence of former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson. After a closed-door session, both men completed their registration and were issued NDC membership cards .
Explaining his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi said he was forced out by the same toxic political environment that destabilised the Labour Party.
“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” Obi stated .
He lamented the “endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division” that have plagued the opposition, emphasizing that his ambition is not driven by a desire for personal office but by the need to rescue Nigeria from insecurity and poverty .
Earlier, Kwankwaso had denied media reports suggesting a move, but by Sunday evening, he confirmed the defection, saying the NDC aligned with his vision for education and youth empowerment .
“We have discovered that we are on the same page, particularly in the areas of education, youth empowerment, security, and national unity,” Kwankwaso said .
