Political Comeback: Ex-AGF Abubakar Malami Emerges ADC Governorship Candidate in Kebbi Despite Ongoing Fraud Trial

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, has formally emerged as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate for Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, in a dramatic political comeback that has sent shockwaves across the Northwest geopolitical zone.

The endorsement was announced in a statement issued by Malami’s Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, confirming that Malami’s emergence followed extensive consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters across Kebbi State. “I sincerely appreciate the confidence and support shown by leaders, stakeholders, and supporters of the ADC in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Malami stated.

The full ADC ticket for Kebbi State was also announced, with retired Major General Aminu Bande as the senatorial candidate for Kebbi Central, retired DCG Ibrahim Muhammad Mera for Kebbi North, and Garba Danjuma Limi for Kebbi South Senatorial District.

Malami declared a “State of Emergency on Misgovernance” in Kebbi, citing alarming statistics including over 67 percent of children between ages six and 15 being out of school, and more than 88 percent of the state’s children living in multidimensional poverty. He promised to prioritise security, education, healthcare, agricultural revival, and youth empowerment if elected.

His emergence comes despite his ongoing N8.7 billion fraud trial — a development that has already triggered fresh debates across Nigeria about accountability, corruption, and the fitness of candidates for public office.

Malami is expected to face incumbent Governor Nasir Idris of the APC in what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested governorship races in the North in 2027.
