Keyamo described the ticket being offered to Jonathan as a proxy arrangement — suggesting that the real power and agenda behind the former president’s potential candidacy belongs not to Jonathan himself but to political godfathers, factional interests, and power brokers who see the former president’s name and national appeal as a convenient electoral vehicle for advancing their own political ambitions under the cover of a familiar and respected face.
The minister further warned that a proxy candidacy would expose Jonathan to the full fury of electoral competition, media scrutiny, and political attacks — without giving him the genuine independence, authority, and structural support needed to mount a credible, competitive, and dignity-preserving presidential campaign against the formidable APC re-election machinery.
“Former President Jonathan has earned a place of honour and respect in Nigeria’s democratic history. He must not allow that legacy to be compromised by accepting a ticket where others pull the strings while he bears the political risk and public exposure,” Keyamo declared pointedly.
The Aviation Minister’s warning is being widely interpreted as a calculated APC strategy to discourage Jonathan from entering the 2027 presidential race — recognising that the former president’s entry into the opposition’s presidential campaign would significantly complicate Tinubu’s re-election calculus, particularly in the South-South, South-East, and Middle Belt regions where Jonathan retains enormous popularity and emotional resonance.
