‘Jonathan Must Reject Proxy Presidential Ticket’ — Keyamo Issues Strong Warning to Former President

Minister of Aviation and APC chieftain, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has issued a bold and pointed warning to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan — urging him to reject what he described as a proxy presidential ticket being offered to the former leader ahead of the 2027 general elections, and cautioning Jonathan against allowing himself to be used as a political instrument by powerful forces pursuing their own hidden agendas under the cover of his name and national goodwill.

Keyamo’s strong and unusually direct public warning to Jonathan signals the growing anxiety within the APC and the Tinubu administration over the former president’s rapidly rising political profile — particularly following the court ruling confirming his electoral eligibility and his subsequent emergence as the PDP’s named presidential candidate amid chaotic and violence-marred convention scenes.

The minister argued forcefully that Jonathan — a former president who left office with dignity, grace, and a legacy of peaceful democratic transition — stands to irreparably damage his hard-earned historical reputation if he allows himself to be positioned as a front man for political interests that are not genuinely committed to his personal vision, his political values, or the best interests of the Nigerian people.

Keyamo described the ticket being offered to Jonathan as a proxy arrangement — suggesting that the real power and agenda behind the former president’s potential candidacy belongs not to Jonathan himself but to political godfathers, factional interests, and power brokers who see the former president’s name and national appeal as a convenient electoral vehicle for advancing their own political ambitions under the cover of a familiar and respected face.

The minister further warned that a proxy candidacy would expose Jonathan to the full fury of electoral competition, media scrutiny, and political attacks — without giving him the genuine independence, authority, and structural support needed to mount a credible, competitive, and dignity-preserving presidential campaign against the formidable APC re-election machinery.

“Former President Jonathan has earned a place of honour and respect in Nigeria’s democratic history. He must not allow that legacy to be compromised by accepting a ticket where others pull the strings while he bears the political risk and public exposure,” Keyamo declared pointedly.

The Aviation Minister’s warning is being widely interpreted as a calculated APC strategy to discourage Jonathan from entering the 2027 presidential race — recognising that the former president’s entry into the opposition’s presidential campaign would significantly complicate Tinubu’s re-election calculus, particularly in the South-South, South-East, and Middle Belt regions where Jonathan retains enormous popularity and emotional resonance.

Political analysts note that Keyamo’s public intervention also reflects a broader APC concern about the consolidation of opposition forces around a single credible candidate — with the Obi-Kwankwaso Labour Party alliance, Atiku’s ADC candidacy, and now Jonathan’s potential PDP run creating a crowded but increasingly dangerous opposition landscape for the ruling party’s 2027 presidential ambitions.
Former President Jonathan’s camp and the PDP are yet to formally respond to Keyamo’s warning at the time of filing this report.
