Northern Elders Reject Obi-Kwankwaso Merger Bid Ahead of 2027

Plans for a potential Obi-Kwankwaso alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections are already facing stiff opposition from Northern political stakeholders.

According to sources close to the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), the proposed merger between Peter Obi’s Labour Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso’s NNPP is being rejected on grounds of regional power balance. The elders argue that with President Bola Tinubu—a Southerner—currently in office, the next president must come from the North.

“The North cannot back a Southern candidate in 2027,” a senior NEF member told CDA News Nigeria. “Kwankwaso risks his political base if he runs as Obi’s deputy.”

Political analysts say the resistance could derail the merger before formal talks begin. While both camps have expressed openness to dialogue, the Northern rejection poses a major threat to opposition unity.

CDA News Nigeria learns that behind-the-scenes meetings are ongoing, but consensus remains elusive.
