Police Pledge Crackdown on Electoral Offences as INEC Deploys Materials for Ekiti Governorship Election

Security agencies have vowed zero tolerance for thuggery and vote buying as the Independent National Electoral Commission deploys sensitive materials for Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election.

Police authorities announced enhanced deployment across all 16 local government areas, with checkpoints established to intercept movement of arms and political mercenaries. The command warned that vote buyers and their accomplices face immediate arrest and prosecution.

INEC confirmed that ballot papers and result sheets have been inspected by party agents and transported to Registration Area Centres ahead of Saturday’s poll. The election features Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC seeking re-election against ADC’s Dare Bejide and other contenders.

The security pledge follows widespread reports of monetised primaries and fears that financial inducements could undermine electoral integrity. Police commissioners have directed divisional officers to monitor polling units and collaborate with anti-graft agencies to track suspicious cash movements.

Political parties have signed peace accords, though observers remain cautious given history of electoral violence in off-cycle polls. The Ekiti election is viewed as a bellwether for ruling party performance ahead of 2027.
