Residents of the Oworoshoki community in Lagos are counting their losses and facing homelessness after their dwellings were demolished by state authorities. The exercise, which occurred on Tuesday, has left many families stranded and businesses destroyed.
Affected residents recounted their painful experiences, describing how they lost homes and livelihoods with little notice. Many claimed they were not given adequate time to remove their belongings before bulldozers moved in.
“I lost everything – my shop, my home, all my possessions are gone,” said one displaced resident. “We have nowhere to go and no means to start over.”
While the Lagos State government often cites urban development and enforcement of master plans as reasons for such demolitions, the human cost continues to be significant. The incident has sparked renewed debate about the balance between urban development and the welfare of citizens.
