ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu has commuted the death sentence of Maryam Sanda to 12 years imprisonment, as part of a broader presidential pardon affecting 85 other convicts.
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), confirmed the decision on Wednesday, stating the review ensured only those who met “legal and procedural requirements” benefited.
Sanda was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 for the culpable homicide of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, in 2017.
In an official statement, the government cited several reasons for the commutation, including compassionate grounds for the interest of her children, her good conduct in prison, and her demonstrated remorse.
The presidential pardon concludes a major prerogative of mercy exercise, which the AGF said underscores the administration’s desire to “balance justice with compassion
