Bishop’s US Testimony on “Christian Genocide” Central to US-Nigeria Row

MAKURDI – Bishop Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has been identified as a central figure in the diplomatic crisis between the United States and Nigeria over allegations of a “Christian genocide.”

The Bishop testified twice before the US Congress, describing what he termed “systematic massacres” and a “genocidal persecution” of Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. He presented records claiming over 1,000 Christians were killed and more than 160 churches destroyed within months.

Bishop Anagbe accused the Nigerian government of a “conspiracy of silence,” alleging authorities are turning a blind eye to the violence in pursuit of an “Islamic agenda.” His testimony, which reportedly led to death threats against him, is cited as a key influence behind former US President Donald Trump’s recent threat of military action against Nigeria.
