Ado-Ekiti – The Nigerian Medical Association in Ekiti State has firmly dismissed recent allegations of organ harvesting at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, describing the claims as unfounded and sensational.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Ifedayo Oreyemi, and Secretary, Dr. Oluwatobi Akinluyi, the NMA expressed deep concern over widespread misinformation surrounding a clinical case, insisting that no illicit organ removal occurred.
The association clarified that following a surgical procedure, a removed kidney specimen was formally handed to the patient’s wife in the operating theatre—a standard practice—and was later conveyed to the pathology lab for evaluation.
“The specimen remains securely within the hospital system… Any suggestion to the contrary is entirely without factual basis,” the NMA stated.
Condemns “Excessive” Staff Sanctions
While defending the hospital’s protocols, the NMA strongly condemned the subsequent dismissal of the consultant surgeon involved and the suspension of resident doctors and theatre staff.
The association argued the sanctions were “excessive and disproportionate,” noting that affected staff were not given a fair hearing or allowed to appear before any investigative panel.
It called for the immediate reversal of the dismissal and suspensions, urging that professional accountability be pursued through transparent, peer-reviewed mechanisms rather than actions driven by public pressure.
The NMA warned that such sensational allegations and rapid punitive measures risk eroding public confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
