Mass Defection Reshapes Kano Politics: Governor Yusuf Leads 31 Lawmakers to APC

KANO – In a political realignment of historic proportions, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading a bloc of 31 legislators from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) into the ruling party.

Governor Yusuf made the declaration on Monday, January 26, 2026, at a ceremony in Government House, Kano, attended by top APC leaders including former National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

The governor stated that after extensive consultations, 22 of the 24 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and 9 of the 14 members of the House of Representatives from the state concluded to join him in moving to the APC. He framed the decision as a move to “strengthen governance” and foster partnership over polarization.

“We are choosing partnership rather than polarisation. Political parties are vehicles; the destination is to bring positive change to the people of Kano,” Governor Yusuf stated.

Former Chairman Ganduje immediately declared Governor Yusuf as the new leader of the APC in Kano State, pledging the full support of all party members. The mass defection effectively consolidates the APC’s control over the state’s executive and legislative arms.
