Chief Chukwunma Victor Nnochiri, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Abia Central senatorial hopeful, has publicly condemned the Nigerian Senate for its decision not to support the mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
Nnochiri described the Senate’s position as a setback for electoral transparency and accountability. He argued that electronic transmission is a critical tool for reducing malpractice, ensuring result integrity, and restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
“In an age where technology drives efficiency and transparency, it is disheartening that the Senate would reject a provision that would significantly reduce human interference and fraud in our elections,” Nnochiri stated.
The condemnation comes amid ongoing national debate over electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate recently passed amendments to the Electoral Act but rejected a clause that would have made electronic transmission of results compulsory.
Nnochiri, who is vying for the Abia Central senatorial seat, urged the National Assembly to reconsider its stance, emphasizing that credible elections are the foundation of a stable democracy.
