Former House of Representatives member and climate change advocate, Sam Onuigbo, has emphasized the blue economy as a critical pathway for Nigeria’s sustainable development and climate resilience.
Speaking at the public presentation of a new book, “Blue Economy: Gateway to a Sustainable Future,” in Abuja, Onuigbo urged policymakers to mainstream climate action across all sectors of national planning. He described the blue economy as an opportunity for economic diversification and a tool for building climate resilience.
Onuigbo, who sponsored the Climate Change Act of 2021, stated that Nigeria’s future depends on effectively embedding climate action within the economy. He commended the Tinubu administration for establishing the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, which is tasked with harnessing Nigeria’s 853km coastline sustainably.
The former lawmaker outlined related government initiatives, including the National Carbon Market Activation Policy and the operationalization of the Climate Change Fund. He called for the implementation of the Climate Change Act’s provision to integrate climate studies into all educational levels.
The event gathered policymakers, academics, and development experts to discuss leveraging maritime resources for sustainable growth, job creation, and environmental protection.
