The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory that their votes will count in the ongoing Area Council elections, describing the process as credible and transparent.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan gave the assurance while speaking with journalists after monitoring voting across parts of the Abuja metropolis on Saturday. He expressed satisfaction with the exercise’s conduct, stating that all Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines deployed for the polls functioned effectively.

According to Amupitan, reports indicated that voting was progressing peacefully across polling units, with impressive turnout recorded in several locations, although participation was lower in some areas. He commended voters for their orderly conduct, describing it as a positive sign of democratic growth.
The INEC chairman acknowledged that a few polling units experienced delays in material arrival but said such cases had been identified and were being addressed. He added that officials at the FCT Election Monitoring Centre were documenting issues and taking corrective steps where necessary.

Amupitan praised the professionalism of security agencies deployed for the exercise, noting that only individuals without proper accreditation tags encountered difficulties. He maintained that the commission was receiving encouraging reports from polling units across the six Area Councils.
“The atmosphere is calm across all polling units,” he said, assuring that lessons from the FCT Area Council elections would inform preparations for future polls.
