The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election held on Saturday.
Prof. Andrew Abue, the Collation Officer for AMAC, announced that Maikalangu, the incumbent chairman, scored 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast to secure re-election. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 12,109 votes to finish second, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed 3,398 votes.
Results Breakdown
According to INEC, total registered voters in AMAC stood at 837,338, with 65,676 accredited voters. Total votes cast were 65,197, with 2,336 rejected votes. Other parties and their scores included:
· SDP: 2,185 votes
· NNPP: 1,694 votes
· APGA: 1,111 votes
· ADP: 588 votes
· YPP: 421 votes
· Accord: 403 votes
· ZLP: 189 votes
Party Agents Hail Process
APC Collation Agent Gambo Babale described the election and collation process as credible and transparent, noting that PDP won two ward councillor positions in Karu and Karshi, “which is to tell you the level of transparency that happened in this election.”
YPP Ward Collation Agent Abdullahi Ibrahim also commended the transparency of the collation process while congratulating the winner. Result sheets were signed by agents from ADC, APC, APGA, YPP, and NNPP present at the collation centre.
Maikalangu’s victory strengthens APC’s hold on the FCT’s largest area council ahead of future elections.
