TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — The Israeli military announced on Monday that it had struck internal security command centers and ballistic missile launch sites in central Iran, marking the first wave of raids since Tehran appointed a new supreme leader.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the Israeli Air Force “completed an additional wave of strikes on infrastructure across Iran belonging to the Iranian regime”.
The targets included “a rocket engine production facility and several long-range ballistic missiles launch sites” that threatened Israel.
The internal security headquarters in the central city of Isfahan, a police headquarters, and other facilities used by the Revolutionary Guards and paramilitary Basij force were also hit.
The IDF described the Basij and internal security forces as “a central arm in the repression of the Iranian civilian population”.
The strikes come just hours after Iran’s Assembly of Experts named Mojtaba Khamenei, son of slain former leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had earlier warned that any successor would be an “unequivocal target for elimination”.
The ongoing conflict, now in its second week, has seen Iran launch retaliatory missile and drone strikes across the Gulf, hitting targets in Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE.
Oil prices have surged past $114 per barrel amid fears of supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US has confirmed it has destroyed 42 Iranian naval vessels and over 3,000 targets since operations began on February 28.
President Donald Trump has threatened that Iran’s new leader “will not last long” without US approval.
