ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended three executive members from Wuse Ward in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) for allegedly spearheading the controversial and now-nullified suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the National Assembly .
The suspended officials include the ward chairman, Kanayo Chukwu, as well as Amanda Pam and Omale Suleiman. The decision was announced on Sunday at a well-attended party meeting held at the ADC’s FCT secretariat in Abuja .
Addressing journalists and party members, a member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Emmanuel Destiny, declared the initial suspension of Senator Kingibe illegal, emphasizing that it violated the party’s constitution and laid-down procedures. He stressed that due process was not followed .
“The party is supreme to every individual. Until now, the national wing of the party has not received any letter of complaint or petition against Sen. Kingibe. You cannot wake up and suspend a serving senator without putting your complaints or petition in writing,” Destiny stated . He added that the national leadership would not condone what he described as “misconduct” and “gangsterism” by the ward officials .
‘Enough is Enough’
The party’s Deputy National Auditor, Princess Nneka Nneboh, said the leadership could no longer remain silent after giving those involved ample opportunity to follow due process. “It is of no use keeping quiet because we asked them to do the right thing and follow the proper channel. Whatever decision we take here today stands… it is time to call a spade a spade. Enough is enough,” she declared .
The FCT Secretary of the party, John Hyginus, also criticized what he termed “administrative incompetence” and a “gross breach of the party’s constitution” by the three officials. He announced that the ward and area council chairmen had passed a vote of no confidence in them .
The Controversy Unfolds
The crisis began earlier in the week when officials of the Wuse Ward announced Kingibe’s indefinite suspension over allegations including anti-party activities, insubordination, withholding campaign funds, confiscating the ward register, and persistent absence from meetings .
However, the national leadership of the ADC quickly distanced itself from the claim. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, had issued a statement urging the public and media to disregard the report, describing it as “false and misleading” and clarifying that a ward lacks the constitutional authority to suspend a sitting senator .
The motion to suspend the three ward executives was moved by an ADC chieftain from Wuse Ward, Danlami Zuru, and seconded by Samuel Dimgba. The meeting, which drew representatives from key party organs, signals a firm move by the national leadership to reassert control and enforce discipline within its ranks .
