ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, did not accuse residents of Borno State and Yobe State of aiding terrorist activities.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DHQ said earlier reports suggesting that the CDS blamed local populations were misinterpretations of his remarks. It stressed that the military leadership recognizes the sacrifices and resilience of communities in the North-East affected by insurgency.
According to the clarification, General Musa’s comments were aimed at encouraging stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities in combating terrorism, rather than assigning blame. The DHQ emphasized that civilian cooperation remains a critical component in ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The military further noted that residents of Borno and Yobe have consistently supported security efforts through intelligence sharing and community vigilance, contributing significantly to progress recorded in the fight against insurgency.
The clarification comes amid public reactions to earlier interpretations of the CDS’s remarks, which sparked concern among stakeholders and residents in the affected states.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the DHQ urged Nigerians to rely on verified information and avoid spreading misleading narratives that could undermine ongoing security operations.
