ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed ongoing talks with former PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, and other party leaders, but insisted that the party’s national convention will hold as scheduled.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Wike acknowledged that reconciliation discussions are taking place among key stakeholders, but he made it clear that these talks will not derail the convention, which is set to elect new national officers.
“Yes, we are talking. We are talking with Mohammed, we are talking with others. But let me be clear: the convention will hold. There is no going back on that,” Wike stated.
The FCT Minister, who leads a faction of the PDP that has been at odds with the party’s national leadership, emphasized that the convention must go ahead to allow the party to move forward.
His remarks come amid speculation that the reconciliation talks might lead to a postponement of the convention. However, Wike’s position suggests that the party is determined to proceed with the exercise.
The PDP has yet to release an official statement on the outcome of the talks. The convention is expected to produce new leaders to steer the main opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.
