Protest Hits INEC as Groups Demand Recognition of Nafiu Bala ADC Faction

Fresh political tension has emerged as civil society groups staged a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding compliance with a court ruling recognizing a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The protesters called on INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, to enforce the judgment by formally recognizing the faction led by Nafiu Bala. They insisted that failure to do so could undermine the rule of law and democratic principles.

The development is seen as a potential setback for key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Atiku Abubakar, amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Protesters accused INEC of delay in implementing the court’s decision, urging the electoral body to act swiftly in order to maintain its credibility and neutrality. They also emphasized that adherence to judicial rulings is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Security operatives were deployed around the commission’s premises to maintain order as demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans calling for justice and compliance.

As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official response to the protest. However, political observers warn that the situation could escalate if the dispute within the ADC is not promptly resolved.

The unfolding crisis adds another layer of complexity to Nigeria’s political landscape as parties and stakeholders begin early preparations for the next election cycle.
