Falana, Adams Warn of Possible One-Candidate Presidential Election

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana and former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole have raised concerns over the possibility of Nigeria heading toward a one-candidate presidential election.

The duo made the remarks amid growing political tension and ongoing disputes within opposition parties, particularly the crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Falana warned that the weakening of opposition parties through internal conflicts and legal battles could inadvertently create a scenario where only one dominant candidate emerges for the presidency. He stressed that a healthy democracy requires vibrant opposition and competitive elections.

Oshiomhole, on his part, echoed similar concerns, noting that unresolved political disputes and institutional decisions could significantly shape the 2027 electoral landscape. He called for urgent steps to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure a level playing field for all political actors.

The comments come at a time when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing scrutiny over its handling of party disputes, particularly its decision to suspend recognition of factions within the ADC.

Political analysts warn that if the current trend continues, it could erode public confidence in the electoral process and reduce voter participation.

Observers have urged stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, legal clarity, and institutional independence to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the next general elections.
