Vinicius Jr: Brazil Not 2026 World Cup Favourites

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr has downplayed expectations that the five-time champions will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup as favourites, insisting that the team must remain focused and humble ahead of the global tournament.

Speaking during a media interaction in Rio de Janeiro, the Real Madrid star acknowledged Brazil’s rich football history but cautioned against overconfidence, pointing to the competitive strength of other national teams.

“We respect the history of our national team, but we cannot say we are favourites. There are many strong teams, and we must work hard to earn our place,” Vinicius said.

The 25-year-old, who is expected to be a key player for Brazil in the tournament, emphasized the importance of team cohesion and a step-by-step approach to success. He noted that European sides such as France, England, and defending champions Argentina remain formidable contenders.

Brazil is currently in the qualification phase for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Seleção are seeking their first World Cup title since 2002.

Vinicius’ remarks have sparked debate among Brazilian fans, with some applauding his realism while others argue the nation’s talent pool makes them perennial favourites.
