TEHRAN, IRAN – Iran has issued a stark warning that it will target Red Sea shipping lanes if the United States launches a ground invasion of its territory, escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East region.
A senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the threat in a state television broadcast on Thursday, stating that Iran’s military is prepared to strike strategic maritime chokepoints in response to any American ground offensive. The warning comes amid heightened speculation about possible US military action following a series of exchanges between the two nations.
“If the Americans make the mistake of launching a ground invasion, the Red Sea will burn. No vessel will be safe,” the IRGC commander declared.
The threat raises the specter of disruption to global trade routes, with the Red Sea serving as a critical corridor for international shipping, including oil tankers. Previous Iranian attacks on shipping in the region have triggered spikes in global energy prices.
The US has not confirmed any plans for a ground invasion. The Pentagon, in a brief statement, said it “does not respond to threats” but reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of navigation in international waters.
The exchange follows weeks of escalating rhetoric, missile tests, and reports of airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions remain ongoing, with European mediators attempting to revive stalled nuclear negotiations.
