ABUJA, NIGERIA – The camps of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike have reportedly initiated reconciliation talks aimed at healing the deep divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the party’s national convention.
Sources close to both camps confirmed that back-channel discussions have commenced, with key intermediaries working to bridge the gap between the two factions. The move comes just days before the PDP’s March 29–30 national convention, which is seen as a crucial test of the party’s ability to unify ahead of the 2027 elections.
“There is a genuine effort to find common ground. Both sides understand that a divided PDP cannot face the 2027 elections,” a party source familiar with the talks said.
The rift between the Wike and Makinde factions—often referred to as the “G-5” during the 2023 elections—has been a source of instability within the party. The two governors, alongside other aggrieved leaders, had publicly opposed the leadership of former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and called for the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
The reconciliation talks are focused on power-sharing arrangements, the zoning of key positions, and a commitment to support the outcome of the upcoming convention.
The PDP National Working Committee has yet to comment on the development, but party leaders have expressed optimism that the talks could pave the way for a successful convention.
