Onanuga Slams Atiku Over Power Rotation Comments, Says Tinubu Must Complete Eight Years
By CDA News Nigeria
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent comments on Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement, urging him to “bury the thought of running again” in 2027 .
Onanuga was reacting to Atiku’s Wednesday interview on Arise TV, where the former VP argued that the South has held the presidency for 18 years since 1999 compared to the North’s 10 years, asking, “So who is in the deficit?” .
In a strongly worded statement on X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga described Atiku’s political arithmetic as “dubious” and “self-serving” . He noted that the North’s shorter tenure was due to the untimely death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, which led to Goodluck Jonathan’s succession—an “accidental breach” that does not invalidate the rotation arrangement .
“Since Buhari completed his eight years, Tinubu too must complete his own. All Atiku needs to do is to bury the thought of running again, as it is still the South’s turn in the 2027 election,” Onanuga wrote .
The presidential aide also recalled that in 2023, Atiku disregarded the PDP’s zoning formula by seeking to succeed a fellow northerner after eight years in office. “His ambition fractured the PDP, leading to his resounding defeat at the polls. Another spectacular failure awaits this perennial candidate,” he added .
Atiku has yet to officially respond to Onanuga’s latest remarks, though his spokesperson previously accused the presidency of attempting to “silence credible opposition” .
