Abia Police Deny Torturing Female Suspect During Vandalism Investigation

The Abia State Police Command has officially denied an online report accusing it of framing, torturing, and denying bail to a senior official of the Abia State Homeland Security Service .

In a rejoinder issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command described the allegations as “false” and clarified the true circumstances surrounding the incident .

According to the police, the suspect, Tochi Ireokwu (Deputy Director of Logistics and Supply, Homeland Security), alongside three other suspects, was apprehended through actionable intelligence for alleged acts of “economic sabotage, vandalisation, stealing, and conspiracy” .

The Police detailed a sequence of events where the suspect allegedly obtained keys from a government facility under false pretenses to steal valuable items. On April 6, it was reported that the suspect orchestrated a diversion by organizing an “emergency security lecture,” during which a separate team allegedly vandalized the facility, loading items such as armoured cables, wires, and engine metals into an unregistered Toyota Sienna .

The police confirmed the suspects were intercepted while attempting to flee. The matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where confessional statements were obtained. The case has been charged before a Federal High Court in Umuahia, and the suspects were remanded in custody pending a further hearing scheduled for May 13, 2026 .

The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to respecting human rights and the rule of law, urging the public to disregard what they termed misinformation .
