A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Comrade Chinweuba Anyaragbu, has called on the Federal Government to cut off all diplomatic ties with South Africa following repeated xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.
Anyaragbu made the demand in a statement issued in Umuahia on Sunday, April 26, 2026, describing the continuous brutalisation and killing of Nigerians in South Africa as “beyond redemption.”
“The persistent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa have become a national disgrace. The government of South Africa has repeatedly demonstrated that it cannot guarantee the safety of Nigerians living in that country,” Anyaragbu said.
He noted that despite various diplomatic interventions and peace meetings between both nations, South African authorities have failed to take decisive action against perpetrators of violence targeting foreign nationals.
“Nigeria must take a firm stand. We cannot continue to watch our citizens being killed and their businesses destroyed while our government maintains a friendly posture with a country that treats us with contempt,” he added.
Anyaragbu argued that cutting diplomatic ties would send a strong message and force South Africa to reassess its treatment of foreign nationals. He urged the Federal Government to prioritise the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad over diplomatic niceties.
As of press time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not issued an official response to the call.
