‘Zoning Cannot Fix Nigeria’s Problems,’ Hayatudeen Warns Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prominent Nigerian banker, economist, and respected political voice, Mallam Mohammed Hayatudeen, has issued a bold and thought-provoking warning to Nigeria’s political class, declaring that the continued reliance on zoning arrangements as a framework for power sharing will not address the deep-rooted challenges confronting the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hayatudeen, who has consistently advocated for merit-driven governance and institutional reform, maintained that Nigeria’s recurring crises of development, insecurity, poverty, and economic instability cannot be resolved through the geographical rotation of political offices, but rather through the deliberate selection of competent, visionary, and integrity-driven leadership at all levels of government.

The respected figure warned that Nigerian politicians and political parties must resist the temptation of reducing the nation’s complex leadership needs to a simplistic question of which region or ethnic group produces the next set of leaders, stressing that what Nigeria urgently needs is not a zoned president or governor, but a capable one.

He further cautioned that the 2027 elections represent a critical opportunity for Nigerians to make a decisive break from the politics of sentiment, ethnicity, and zoning — urging the electorate to demand accountability, competence, and a clear development agenda from every candidate seeking public office.

Political analysts have described Hayatudeen’s position as a timely intervention in the national conversation, particularly as zoning debates continue to dominate political discussions across major parties ahead of the next electoral cycle.

His remarks are expected to generate significant debate among political stakeholders, party leaders, and civil society organisations in the coming days.
