Senate Power Clash: Akpabio and Oshiomhole Lock Horns After New Leadership Rules Tightened

A dramatic and explosive clash has erupted between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former APC National Chairman and senator-elect Adams Oshiomhole, after the Nigerian Senate moved decisively to tighten its internal rules governing the emergence of principal officers — a development that has ignited one of the most fierce and publicly visible power struggles to rock Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber in recent memory.

The confrontation between two of Nigeria’s most forceful, combative, and politically formidable personalities has set the Senate ablaze with tension — with both men deploying their considerable political arsenals in what is fast becoming a defining battle over who controls the soul, structure, and leadership direction of the incoming 11th National Assembly.

At the heart of the clash is the Senate’s controversial new rules, which effectively tighten the conditions under which senators — particularly those arriving from executive positions such as governorships — can contest and occupy principal officer positions in the legislative chamber.

The rules, widely seen as targeting former governors and other high-profile political heavyweights seeking to leverage their executive pedigree and financial muscle to dominate the Senate’s leadership structure, have drawn fierce and immediate resistance from Oshiomhole — a former governor of Edo State and one of the most combative political figures in contemporary Nigerian politics.

Oshiomhole, who has never been known to accept political constraints without a vigorous fight, is said to have confronted Akpabio directly and publicly over what he described as an undemocratic, unconstitutional, and self-serving manipulation of Senate rules designed to protect the interests of the current leadership at the expense of incoming senators with legitimate leadership ambitions.

Akpabio, equally combative and equally unwilling to yield ground on what he views as a necessary and legitimate reform to protect the Senate’s institutional integrity, is said to have fired back with equal ferocity — making clear that the new rules would stand and that no amount of political pressure from any quarter would compel him to reverse a decision he believes serves the long-term interests of the National Assembly.

The clash has split the Senate along factional lines, with senators aligned with Akpabio rallying behind the new rules as a necessary safeguard against executive dominance of the legislature, while supporters of Oshiomhole and other affected former governors denounce the rules as a targeted and politically motivated power play.

Political analysts warn that the Akpabio-Oshiomhole confrontation — pitting two of Nigeria’s most experienced and ruthless political operators against each other — could have far-reaching consequences for the stability of the 11th National Assembly and for the broader relationship between the legislative and executive branches of government in the months ahead.

With the inauguration of the new Assembly fast approaching, all eyes are now on whether a compromise can be brokered — or whether the clash will escalate into a full-blown institutional crisis that disrupts the smooth transition to the 11th National Assembly.
