Nigerians are anxiously awaiting the verdict of world football governing body FIFA over a petition by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during last November’s 2025 World Cup African play-offs .
FIFA’s decision, earlier expected to be announced after Monday’s meeting, has yet to be released and is now anticipated on Tuesday .
The outcome could potentially reinstate the Super Eagles into the intercontinental play-offs in Mexico later this month, where one of the final World Cup tickets is on offer .
The NFF filed a formal complaint in December 2025 following Nigeria’s 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the African play-off final. The petition alleges that several DR Congo players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, hold dual nationalities, potentially violating eligibility rules .
Nigeria’s argument hinges on DR Congo’s constitution, which reportedly prohibits dual citizenship. The NFF contends that fielding players with dual citizenship conflicts with FIFA’s player eligibility and nationality-switch procedures .
If the petition is upheld, possible outcomes include match forfeiture, a 3–0 award to Nigeria, points adjustments, fines, or disqualification. If rejected, DR Congo’s result would stand, ending Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes .
However, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire clarified that no decision has been made, stating: “There is no decision from FIFA at this time. Any claims that a ruling has been made are false” .
Even if Nigeria receives a favorable ruling, automatic qualification is not guaranteed, as it could lead to replays or other adjustments, with other nations like Cameroon speculated as potential beneficiaries .
