The United States government has raised a serious alarm that the Islamic State (ISIS), following its defeat in Iraq and Syria, has significantly shifted its operations to West Africa, with Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin identified as major fronts in America’s 2026 counterterrorism strategy.
The US said the jihadist group was forced to splinter and relocate to Africa and Central Asia, exploiting weak governance structures in the region following its territorial defeat in the Middle East.
According to the strategy document, regions now facing renewed extremist threats include West Africa, the Sahel region, the Lake Chad Basin, Mozambique, Sudan, and Somalia, where parts of ISIS have re-established themselves. Punch
In the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, where parts of northern Nigeria fall, ISIS provinces operate through Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The strategy document stated that Washington’s goals in Africa include guaranteeing that no jihadist group builds a base of operations capable of launching attacks against the United States and American interests, and protecting Christians targeted by these groups. The Sun Nigeria
The US said it would maintain a light military footprint in Africa while expecting regional partners to shoulder more of the counterterrorism burden through intelligence sharing and coordinated operations.
Security analysts warn that the development poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s national security, calling on the Federal Government to urgently strengthen its counterterrorism infrastructure and deepen intelligence cooperation with the United States and regional partners.
