Organised Labour in Nigeria has thrown out the proposed N100,000 minimum wage, describing the figure as completely inadequate and far below what is needed to sustain the average Nigerian worker and their family in the current economic climate.
The rejection, which has sent fresh shockwaves through government and employer circles, signals that wage negotiations between Labour and relevant authorities are far from settled, with workers’ unions standing firm on their demand for a more realistic and humane wage package.
Labour leaders argued that with the soaring cost of food, transportation, housing, healthcare, and education, a N100,000 monthly wage falls dangerously short of meeting the basic needs of Nigerian workers, many of whom are already struggling under the weight of inflation and economic hardship.
“We will not accept a wage that condemns Nigerian workers to poverty. Our members deserve a living wage, not a survival wage,” a Labour spokesperson was quoted as conveying.
The unions have called on the federal government and the organised private sector to return to the negotiating table with a more serious and worker-friendly proposal, warning that continued delays and inadequate offers could trigger industrial action.
Nigeria’s workers, Labour insists, have sacrificed enough and deserve better.
