Lagos Court Jails Man 15 Years for N26m Toyota Hilux Fraud

LAGOS – A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced a 42-year-old man, Adewale Bamidele, to 15 years imprisonment for defrauding a businessman of N26 million in a Toyota Hilux truck scam.

Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the verdict on Wednesday after finding Bamidele guilty of three counts of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the court that the convict falsely presented himself as a car dealer capable of supplying two units of Toyota Hilux vehicles at a discounted price. The victim paid N26 million in full, but Bamidele neither delivered the trucks nor refunded the money.

During the trial, EFCC counsel Samuel Daji presented bank statements, receipts, and WhatsApp messages linking Bamidele to the fraud. The convict pleaded not guilty but failed to prove his innocence.

Justice Oshodi ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. He sentenced Bamidele to five years on each count, to run concurrently, with no option of fine. The court also ordered him to restitute the full N26 million to the victim.
