The Muslim community in Oyo State has taken a firm and clear stand against the demands of terrorists holding abducted teachers and schoolchildren from Oriire Local Government Area.
In an official statement, the Muslim Community of Oyo State strongly condemned the Sharia-related demands made by the abductors, declaring that terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims.
The abductors, who attacked three schools in the Esinele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities on May 15, reportedly demanded the release of detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles, and the implementation of Sharia-related law before freeing the captives.
Two of the terrorist leaders being demanded for release are Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, and his deputy Abubakar Abba — both identified as leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan (Ansaru), a breakaway faction of Boko Haram. They were arrested between May and July 2025 and are currently standing trial on terrorism charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Under the leadership of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, the community announced a special prayer session for the safe return of the abducted schoolchildren, scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Yidi Agodi Praying Ground in Ibadan by 10:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, public and private schools across all 33 local government areas of Oyo State shut down in solidarity with the kidnapped victims.
The community noted that some of the abductees are toddlers as young as two years old being held under harsh conditions, saying, “Our hearts bleed.”
