The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reiterated that the military partnership between the US and Nigeria is rooted in mutual interest, not charity or one-sided benefit.
Speaking during a virtual briefing on Wednesday, AFRICOM Deputy Commander, General John K. Brennan, emphasized that both nations share common security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and maritime crime.
“Our partnership with Nigeria is not about the US imposing its will. It is about two sovereign nations working together to defeat common enemies. We benefit as much as Nigeria does from a stable, secure West Africa,” Brennan stated.
He highlighted ongoing cooperation in intelligence sharing, counterterrorism training, and equipment support for Nigerian special forces battling insurgency in the North-East and banditry in the North-West.
Brennan also acknowledged Nigeria’s growing role as a regional security leader, noting that recent joint exercises have improved operational coordination.
The statement comes amid debates in some Nigerian circles about the true value of US military assistance. Critics have called for greater transparency in the partnership, while government officials welcomed the continued collaboration.
