ABUJA – The National Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to passing citizen-centred amendments to the 1999 Constitution. The Senate has set an ambitious goal to send the first set of changes to state lawmakers for approval before the end of the year.
The announcement was made by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin at a joint retreat for constitution review committees in Lagos. He urged legislators to collaborate and focus on the national interest to ensure the review process is successful.
The committees are currently examining a wide range of proposals, including 69 amendment bills and numerous requests for the creation of new states and local governments. Senator Jibrin expressed confidence that the assembly would meet its deadline, paving the way for a more relevant and modern constitution for Nigeria.
