The Senate’s screening of President Bola Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees turned dramatic on Wednesday when a seasoned foreign affairs official could not name the three senators representing his home state.
Emmanuel Adeyemi, a deputy director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a nominee from Ekiti State, correctly identified Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Senator Yemi Adaramodu but drew a blank on the third, Senator Cyril Fasuyi. His delegation’s attempt to search for the answer online was met with disapproval from the committee.
Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong, Adams Oshiomhole, and Seriake Dickson criticized the lapse, with Ekpenyong stating that nominees representing Nigeria must demonstrate core competence and awareness. The committee screened several other career and non-career nominees, including former military chiefs and politicians, as part of a broader foreign service restructuring.
