The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party deepened on Wednesday as two rival factions publicly clashed over recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The National Working Committee, led by Chairman Tanimu Turaki and backed by PDP governors, presented its Ekiti State governorship candidate with INEC forms, asserting the commission recognises its legitimacy. The event was attended by 30 state chairmen and National Assembly members.
However, the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, represented by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, immediately dismissed the claim as “media hype.” Anyanwu stated that INEC had been formally notified of its own 60-day caretaker committee and does not recognise the Turaki-led NWC.
The dispute stems from a parallel convention held in Ibadan last November, which produced the Turaki leadership, and a subsequent move by the Wike camp to install a rival caretaker committee.
