ABUJA – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has taken control of the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, escalating the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party.
The takeover occurred on Tuesday as armed security operatives from the Police, Civil Defence, and Department of State Services were deployed to the secretariat ahead of parallel meetings scheduled by competing factions.
The Wike-aligned group, led by acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, gained access to the building for their scheduled National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees meetings.
Meanwhile, the Taminu Turaki-led National Working Committee, elected at the controversial Ibadan convention, had also planned to hold their inaugural meeting at the same venue but had not arrived as of reporting time.
Senator Anyanwu, addressing journalists, defended the legitimacy of his faction’s meeting and described the security presence as routine for party gatherings. He dismissed the Ibadan convention as illegitimate, stating: “Every communication to INEC for any congress/convention, I must sign it. I never communicated any letter to INEC for any convention.”
Anti-Turaki protesters gathered outside the secretariat carrying placards with inscriptions such as “No to Turaki” and “Turaki must go,” highlighting the deep divisions within the party.
