KANO – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning of an impending nationwide university shutdown if the Federal Government fails to reach an agreement with the union before the expiration of its one-month ultimatum.
The warning was delivered by ASUU Kano Zonal Coordinator Abdulkadir Muhammad during a press conference in Kano on Monday following the zone’s emergency meeting.
Muhammad stated that the union’s patience is wearing thin as negotiations with the government continue to stall on critical issues affecting the university system and the welfare of academic staff.
“The one-month window we provided for the government to address our demands is rapidly closing. If no concrete agreement is reached, we will have no choice but to resume the nationwide strike,” the zonal coordinator declared.
The ultimatum, which was issued following an emergency National Executive Council meeting last month, was intended to provide the government with additional time to address the union’s demands, including improved funding for universities and better welfare conditions for academic staff.
The potential strike action threatens to disrupt academic activities across public universities in Nigeria, potentially affecting millions of students who have only recently returned to classrooms after previous industrial actions.
ASUU has urged the Federal Government to act swiftly to prevent another disruption in the country’s university system.
