PORT HARCOURT – In a strong appeal for academic unity, Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies has advised the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) to either support the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or maintain a respectful silence.
The call comes in response to CONUA’s recent public statements distancing its members from the industrial action, which ASUU insists is a legitimate struggle for better university funding and staff welfare.
Adesanya-Davies, a Professor of Applied Linguistics at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, described ASUU’s strike as a “patriotic struggle” for the collective good of all academics and the survival of Nigeria’s public university system.
“It is unwise for any academic body to publicly condemn or undermine a struggle aimed at securing better funding,” she stated. “When some are fighting for justice, the least others can do is respect the cause. A divided house cannot stand.”
The professor urged all university unions to pursue a united front, emphasizing that the victory of ASUU’s demands would benefit the entire academic community.
