ABUJA – A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended the party’s planned national convention, deepening the internal leadership crisis within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The faction led by Acting National Chairman Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed announced the decision on Wednesday, citing the need to comply with a Federal High Court judgment.
“Having filed an appeal and in line with our responsibility to uphold the rule of law, the PDP hereby suspends and cancels the proposed Ibadan National Convention pending the decision of the Court of Appeal,” Muhammed told journalists.
The faction also dismissed a conflicting court order from an Oyo State High Court, describing it as an inferior “ex parte” order that cannot override the federal court’s ruling.
National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who spoke alongside Muhammed, alleged security concerns at the party secretariat and claimed he had narrowly escaped an attack by hoodlums.
Despite the internal divisions, the acting chairman insisted the PDP remains “one united and indivisible family” committed to democratic values.
