Reps Reconvene For Tinubu’s N1.15 Trillion Borrowing Request Despite Funding Concerns

ABUJA – The House of Representatives reconvened on Wednesday to consider President Bola Tinubu’s N1.15 trillion borrowing request, despite lawmakers’ frustrations over delayed release of funds for constituency projects.

A lawmaker, speaking anonymously, revealed the Green Chamber returned to session “out of respect for the President,” who personally intervened after members initially planned to “shut everything down” over unmet funding commitments.

The decision came less than 24 hours after the House adjourned amid a crisis of confidence with the executive over stalled project payments. Lawmakers expressed concern that delayed releases for 2024 capital projects and suspended 2025 awards were hurting local economies.

“Many colleagues can’t even return home. Projects have stalled, contractors are idle, and people are suffering,” one member lamented.

Despite skepticism after previous unfulfilled promises, the executive has now pledged to begin clearing outstanding payments within days.

During plenary, the House received President Tinubu’s request to approve new domestic borrowing to finance the 2025 budget deficit. The request was referred to the Committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management for scrutiny before the House adjourned until next week.
