Trump, Iran Sign Versailles Deal to End Mideast War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday to end the Middle East war, with Tehran agreeing to dilute its enriched uranium in exchange for large-scale economic relief.

The signing took place during a candlelit dinner at the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit, with French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders present. Trump confirmed to reporters, “Just signed it.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the document was finalised with both presidents’ signatures. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who mediated the agreement, announced it “shall enter into force with immediate effect.”

As a first step, Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the US immediately lifts its naval blockade. Washington also commits to waiving oil sanctions crippling Iran’s economy. Once a final nuclear agreement is reached, the US will facilitate release of a $300 billion reconstruction fund supported by regional nations.

The war began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched strikes, prompting Iranian counterattacks across the region and effectively shutting down Hormuz.

A two-month negotiating period now begins, with Iran diluting enriched uranium stocks under IAEA supervision. An official ceremony will take place Friday in Switzerland, with technical talks commencing.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy criticised the deal as “the worst foreign policy blunder in decades,” while Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem described it as a “great victory” for Iran.
