NUT Threatens Nationwide School Shutdown Over Escalating Attacks and Abductions of Teachers and Students

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a chilling ultimatum to the Federal Government — threatening a nationwide school shutdown unless urgent and decisive action is taken to address the escalating wave of violent attacks and abductions targeting teachers, students, and educational institutions across the country.

The NUT’s threat represents a desperate cry of anguish from Nigeria’s teaching workforce — men and women who go to work daily under the terrifying shadow of bandit raids, kidnappings, and violent attacks that have turned classrooms across several states into danger zones rather than safe havens of learning and intellectual development.

The union declared that no teacher should be forced to choose between their profession and their life — arguing that the persistent failure of government at all levels to provide adequate security around schools and their personnel has made the teaching profession one of the most dangerous occupations in Nigeria today.

NUT cited a devastating catalogue of incidents — including teachers kidnapped from classrooms, schools raided by armed bandits, students abducted en masse, and school communities living in perpetual terror — as evidence of a security crisis that has reached an absolutely unacceptable and intolerable threshold requiring immediate national emergency response.

The union warned that if the Federal Government, State Governments, and security agencies fail to provide concrete, verifiable, and time-bound commitments to protecting schools, teachers, and students, the NUT will have no choice but to shut down schools nationwide — a drastic action that would affect millions of Nigerian pupils and students but which the union says is necessary to protect the lives of its members.

NUT’s national leadership specifically called on the Federal Government to immediately deploy dedicated security personnel around schools in high-risk states, establish a National School Safety Emergency Fund, fast-track the rescue of all abducted teachers and students currently in captivity, and prosecute all perpetrators of attacks on educational institutions to the fullest extent of the law.
The union also appealed to state governors, traditional rulers, community leaders, and religious authorities to mobilise their influence and resources in creating protective community shields around schools — stressing that school safety is a collective community responsibility that cannot be left to government alone.

“We cannot continue to send our members into classrooms that are open targets for criminals. Enough is enough. The government must act now or we will act to protect our members,” NUT declared with unmistakable determination.

Education stakeholders, parents, and civil society groups have expressed strong solidarity with the NUT’s position — while simultaneously urging the union to continue dialogue with government and explore all possible avenues before resorting to a school closure that would further disrupt the academic calendar of millions of already disadvantaged Nigerian children.

The Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of the National Security Adviser are yet to formally respond to NUT’s ultimatum at the time of filing this report.
