ABUJA — Motorists have reportedly abandoned Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations and other outlets selling petrol at higher prices, following a fresh round of pump price reductions by MRS, AA Rano, Sharon, and other marketers in Abuja .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the development comes as MRS reduced its petrol price by ₦50 to ₦1,210 per litre from ₦1,260 in Abuja and its environs, marking the second reduction in less than two weeks . Similarly, AA Rano and others cut their fuel prices by ₦25 per litre along the Kubwa Expressway and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory on Monday .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the price reduction spree is linked to Dangote Refinery’s latest petrol price cut to ₦1,165 per litre . However, NNPCL retail outlets have yet to adjust their pump prices, which remained between ₦1,299 and ₦1,310 per litre in Gwarinpa, Wuse Zones 4 and 6, and other parts of Abuja .
An attendant at an NNPCL filling station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, lamented the sharp drop in patronage. “I have hardly sold petrol to four or 10 persons since today. Our customers are complaining about the high fuel price. I hope the petrol price will reduce from tomorrow (Tuesday),” he told DAILY POST .
Two other filling station attendants at Shema and Emedab echoed similar sentiments about low patronage . NNPCL spokesperson Andy Odeh had yet to respond to inquiries at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu, suggested that NNPCL and other members might not have received or stocked products from Dangote Refinery . Petrol depot owners have also reduced their fuel prices to at least ₦1,168 per litre, as crude oil prices stood at about $87 and $82 per barrel for Brent and WTI respectively .
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has begun consultations with stakeholders on anti-competitive pricing of petroleum products .
