OSOGBO — Final preparations are in full swing for Saturday’s Osun State governorship election as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office along the Gbongan-Ibadan Road in Osogbo has become a hive of activity, with a heightened security presence.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that security agents, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, are on the premises in large numbers as preparations intensify for deployment across the 30 local government areas of the state. Election stakeholders including civil society organisations, journalists and election observers are also present at the office.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, is meeting with National Commissioners and supporting RECs from other states as final arrangements are being concluded. The election will be held in 3,763 polling units across 332 wards in the 30 local government areas.
INEC on Thursday confirmed that over 1.9 million permanent voter cards (PVCs) were collected for the election. According to the Commission’s National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, 1,906,390 PVCs representing 81.50 per cent of the 2,339,233 registered voters have been collected. The remaining 426,842 PVCs have been safely deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
A total of 6,101 applicants who applied for replacement of damaged or lost PVCs have printed downloadable copies of their cards. Fifteen political parties, including Accord, APC, ADC, PDP, NNPP, LP and SDP, will participate in the election.
