CASABLANCA — Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has called on her teammates to abandon any sense of invincibility after Nigeria’s dismal outing at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which saw the nine-time African champions crash out in the quarter-finals and miss out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Nigeria suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the World Cup play-off, ending their hopes of qualifying for Brazil 2027 .
CDA News Nigeria reports that Ajibade, speaking after the South Africa defeat, acknowledged that women’s football is fast changing across the continent and stressed the need for better preparation . “To be honest, my biggest lesson is just gratitude. We should be grateful,” she said . “We should learn not to be lax because the competition is fierce now. We must realize we’re not invincible; we just need to prepare more, get better, and demand more of ourselves individually and collectively.”
The Super Falcons’ early exit marks their worst performance at the tournament since 2018, when they also exited in the quarter-finals . The defeat against South Africa also marked the first time since the tournament’s inception that Banyana Banyana have beaten Nigeria in a WAFCON match . Ajibade’s call for renewed focus comes as Nigeria looks to rebuild ahead of future competitions .
